Horny Toes…

It's all in how you say what you say or how you hear what is said.

HORNY TOES - the Importance of Listening Fully by Dennis LoweryI read a humorous article that included tales from a National Ambassador for Sauza Tequila (makers of premium tequila) who traveled around talking to people about tequila and spreading the word about it (seems a good gig to me). At an event, a large intimidating man approached them and said, “I like your horny toes.

Taken aback at first the Tequila Ambassador paused, not responding immediately and instead listened as the man continued, then realized the man was talking about one of their premium tequilas, ‘Hornitos’ (a slightly different pronunciation). A welcome revelation for the Tequila Ambassador I’m sure.

Though a funny moment it brings up a point about how nuanced communication can be. This Tequila Ambassador could have responded without thought, which might not have served well in the situation. But didn’t. This is something to learn from. Many people today are so busy inside their own minds, they don’t listen or they immediately pass what they read or hear through a filter predisposed to render an opinion without thought. For most topics and casual conversation this is not a major problem. If you’re discussing desserts, some like chocolate, some like vanilla… some like both. Personal choices, personal opinions… you get the point.

On important things we should listen fully and be willing to think about facts that should form the basis of our opinion and guide the debate. Important issues need civil discourse and we need to listen and hear each other out in order to enter into that type of discussion. We need calm. Not cacophony.

Commenting on (or admiring) someone’s ‘horny toes’ may cause a fight or flight (or a quick trip to a local motel, if the urge and surge is there)… it’s all in how you say what you say or how you hear what is said. Listening closer–checking the facts and your thoughts–leads to learning the truth of the conversation so you can respond in the right way.
